The first option takes me to the login screen and again logging in it logs me of with either the admin account or the guest account The second option gives me like a DOS prompt message but i did not go further than that.. Any suggestions why it is not automatically booting even if i select the 'Disable automatic restart on System failure'. For the second option from below i wanted to give some more details Not sure if it would help "Please seelct the operating system to start: 1 Windows XP Media Center Edition 2 Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" I highlighted the 'Microsoft windows recovery console' and hit the enter key.
There was a message indicating 'System starting window'. The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality. Tyep Exit to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer. The above messages are seen only if i select the "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console' option. I think our replies crossed around the same time.
The reply that i posted was not based on your suggestions. I just thought of providing some info. I have a question though. If the Windows xP cd is available then the system always trys to boot from CD even though i press F8 and it starts loading the drivers and then it displays a message indication 'System is starting the windows'.
I tried logging in and the same result as it logged me off again. I did not see any SFC command. Reply to quoted posts Clear. Downloads View all categories Upload file New files since last visit Files from past 7 days. Members Status Updates.

Is that terribly difficult with directions off the internet? Or do I need to take it somewhere and pay someone?
As is obvious, I know nothing about computers. After I save my data, I'll come back and follow your instructions to reboot and all. Thanks so much. Message 4 of You're very welcome. For providing you the Manual of your laptop, please provide your full model name, product number. Message 5 of Here's another question on this: What is the best way to shut this down?
I just closed the lid earlier and grieved. Message 6 of Never mind, it's dead. Until this, my Toshiba L laptop about a year old worked okay; I think it has a virus as a "news 11 window" kept popping up in IE. I ran the Windows scan and it didn't find anything. I was trying to run a Norton software check which is supposed to run in the safe mode and that is when this happened. I may have inadvertantly done something incorrect; I don't know what.
Is this enough information for someone to help me fix this problem or do I need to take it to someone smarter than I am?
Once the menu appears select "Last Known Good Configuration". See if Windows XP starts correctly. If it does restart the PC again and make sure it goes in normally. The second thing you want to do is enter recovery console and run a check disk. Allow ChkDsk to run and fix any errors. Restart the PC once done and see if it is now working.
If it still doesn't work restart the PC again and enter Recovery Console.
