The Dead of the Night sees us return to Hell with Ellie and her friends as they struggle to come to terms with the great loss they endured at the end of Tomorrow When the War Began.

It is a story about moral choices, about finding the courage to put yourself at risk time and again and most importantly, it is about endurance. It is a young adult invasion literature novel, detailing the occupation of Australia by an unnamed foreign power. A large bird, a white owl I think, flapped across the top of the cliff.

Then came the unmistakable sound of human footsteps. I felt sick with fear and hope. I grabbed Homer by the shoulder. As he stirred into life, I leant over further and clamped my hand on his mouth. He gurgled a bit, then, as I could tell by the sudden tenseness of his body, he woke. We both sat there waiting, paralysed.

And the footsteps kept coming. They were accelerating. I stood, crouching, to be ready. I could see a figure weaving through the trees. It was Fi. It might only be one. Hope is alive. Although this sequel can stand on its own, readers of Tomorrow will find it far more satisfying.? Review "Once again, Marsden's story is riveting because he makes it feel so real. Thoughtful explorations of the nature of fear, bravery, and violence. My 13 year old daughter and I both read and enjoyed the first book in the series.

I have now just finished reading the second and know she will enjoy it, but will find the sexual content a bit uncomfortable. I will let her read it, but plan on discussing it with her.

I would definitely not put this book in the hands of anyone younger. The violence may also be disturbing. I would highly recommend another book out of Australia that we both enjoyed: "Looking for Alibrandi" by Melina Marchetta. Check this one out, good romance, good plot, good decisions. V series A story like this comes along once in a life time, do not, and I mean do not missss this book.
